The good news is that there are places that offer help for single moms or single dads. Lots of nonprofit organizations have programs aimed to help families in need with rent, mortgage payments, food, and other bills. You can get help even when you still have your job.
Apart from trying to set up a payment plan with your utility company, mortgage company, etc, one of the first places to start finding help is the United Way. You can dial 211 to ask for assistance with a lot of things. If they cannot help you with their own funds, they will give you phone numbers of other nonprofits to call for help. A lot of the time, they will refer you to local nonprofits near you that may have funds to help with your situation. Lots of families who find themselves needing of financial help contact the United Way.
You can also find some other nonprofit organizations in your local area that may be able to help. If you ask around, you might find some that have received government funding recently. They may have money to answer your prayers. These terrific organizations offer many services including housing assistance, employment assistance, and even tuition assistance. That means, if you have been laid off, then they might be able to help you find a new one. If you have a young child or children at home, then you need to make sure you find proper child care for them while you are out finding a job.
Federal and state governments also offer many programs that can help families in need. The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families or TANF, for instance, is a popular program that has helped tons of low income, working moms or dads. They can assist with food stamps, job training, as well as financial aid. You can also contact the Low Income Housing Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, to request assistance with your heating bill.
